Held hostage
Author, journalist, speaker will talk about her experiences and mission this Friday in Antigonish
This International Women’s Week, St. Francis Xavier University is welcoming New York Times bestselling author, speaker and journalist Amanda Lindhout as she presents her journey of self-discovery.
Lindhout will speak at the university in an event that’s open to the public to inspire others. She will speak about her life including the trauma of 460 days spent as a hostage in Somalia to the challenges of PTSD during recovery, and ultimately, to a new understanding of herself as a woman with an important mission to motivate change.
Lindhout is a 2010 graduate of the Coady Diploma in Development Leadership at St. F.X. Her multiple-award winning memoir, A House in the Sky, the story of Lindhout’s years as an aspiring television war reporter
in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as the 460 days she spent as a hostage in Somalia, has been a top-10 bestselling book for a record-breaking three years. Optioned by Hollywood production company Annapurna Pictures (Zero Dark Thirty, Her, American Hustle, Joy, Foxcatcher), development has started with Oscar-nominated actress Rooney Mara to play the role of Lindhout.
She founded the Global Enrichment Foundation, a nonprofit organization that raised close to $3 million to help educate and empower women and children in Somalia and Kenya.
