Plenty of activities in coming week for students.

From free swims and skates, to sewing classes, pirates and parrots, local recreation and community groups are planning a wide variety of events and activities for March Break.

These are some of the many offerings taking place in Pictou County during the school holiday – March 11 to 19.

MARCH 11

Pictou library

Shopkins Party, make a Shopkins button, play Shopkins Bingo, make a Shopkins mask, trading, 10:30 a.m.-noon. Call or drop in to register.

Crafty Saturday – Games Day

Museum of Industry

Pirates Parrots and Plunder Pirates of Halifax captains “Jack Sparrow” and “William Turner” available for photos and storytimes, 1-4 p.m.

Blue and gold macaws Bugsy and Caruso at the museum all week, with red macaw Zora and owner Diane Cooke visiting March 11, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. for a close-up conversati­on.

MARCH 14

New Glasgow Library Lego Challenge Drop In – 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. All ages. Play Lego with your friends and complete a series of challenges to become a Master Builder. Kard board Kingdoms – 2:303:30 p.m. Ages five to 12 (under eight need parental supervisio­n), registrati­on is required. Using cardboard and 3D printed parts, Scott Ross, left, and Jamie Livingston construct a pirate ship that is part of the Pirates, Parrots and Plunder activities at the Museum of Industry during March Break.

Pictou library Book Bags from T-Shirts for Kids – 1 p.m.- 2:30 p.m. Bring an old T-shirt and sharp scissors. Must pre-register, space limited.

Mats from T-Shirts – 3-5 p.m. Bring old T-shirts and pointy end scissors (embroidery). Must preregiste­r. Stencillin­g – 6-8 p.m. Ages seven-11 years. Bring plain shirt or plain canvas bag to stencil on. Must pre-register, space limited.

MARCH 15

New Glasgow Library Claymation Day Camp, 11:3012:30 p.m. (LUNCH from 12:30-1 p.m.) 1-2:30 p.m. Using clay, technology and know-how, kids will make their own Claymation videos which we will upload to YouTube! This is a two-part session with a lunch break in between, we ask that the kids bring their own lunch. For ages 8 plus, registrati­on is required.

Engineerin­g Challenge: Spaghetti Towers, 3-4 p.m. Build a tower using only marshmallo­ws and spaghetti! Tallest one wins! For ages 8 plus, registrati­on required.

Harry Potter Trivia Night, 6:30 p.m. For all ages and family friendly. Please register, teams of six or less.

Ski Trip to Wentworth on March 16 for students in grades 9-12. The bus will leave the parking lot near the New Glasgow Farmers Market at 9 a.m., arriving to the ski hill at approximat­ely 10 a.m. and departing from the ski hill at 4 p.m. Rentals available.

MARCH 17

New Glasgow Library Library Detectives – 11:30-12:30 p.m. – Figure out the clues and the puzzles to get out of the room. Registrati­on required, space limited. Ages nine to 12.

Arts & Crafts, 3:30-4:30 p.m. Fun afternoon of painting and crafts! Ages three to eight. Registrati­on required.

Cartoon Night, 6-7 p.m. Animation shorts from the NFB collection. All welcome.
