NDP to nominate Pictou Centre candidate

On Thursday, the NDP party will be holding their nomination meeting for Pictou Centre.

NSCC faculty member John Atwater and former municipal councillor Henderson Paris will stand for nomination. The nomination meeting will take place at 7 p.m. at Summer Street Industries, 72 Park St., New Glasgow.

Atwater is a faculty member in the Social Services program at the Nova Scotia Community College.

He has worked as a youth worker with the Children’s Aid Society of Pictou County, a counsellor attendant with the Pictou Detox Unit, and a house manager with Highland Community Residentia­l Services.

He is a formal local president with NSGEU, sat on the provincial executive and national committees for CUPE, and is now a campus rep with the Nova Scotia Teachers Union.

Paris is a human rights activist and founder of the Run Against Racism. He was a New Glasgow town councillor for 12 years, served twice as deputy mayor, and ran for mayor in 2016. R

etired from a career in the retail and manufactur­ing sectors, Paris has a passion for track and field distance running and has been a coach and travelled nationally with the Royal Canadian Legion Track & Field Championsh­ips.

He was appointed to the Nova Scotia Human Rights Commission as a commission­er in 2010.
