The Paw Files

This week’s little cat lady looking for a home is Garcia. She is a former stray, about a year old and is an absolutely stunning girl. Bright eyes, amazing and quick personality and pretty playful.

Before I tell you any more about her, let’s look at what makes cats like Garcia have a harder time getting adopted.

Simply put, she is a black cat. A lot of people will shy away from adopting a black cat based on myths our ancestors believed many, many generations ago – a time when people were tortured because they accused of being witches.

Some myths: black cats are good luck, and they are bad luck; they should never cross your path, or should cross your path; they should or should not walk away from you or walk within a 13 mile radius of a golden flower when the moon is full. (I made that last one up.) The myths surrounding black cats make absolutely no sense. Some people are spooked by black cats since they are the mascot of Halloween.

Time to rethink these fantastic felines.

When you look at a black cat sitting in the window on a sunny day, it looks like their fur is infused with slivers of gemstones which makes them more precious than mystical. Apparently holding one makes you look slimmer. They go with all decor, and you rarely see their fur on furniture.

Miss Garcia is a huge fan of chasing the laser pointer... gets her little feet tapping all over the floor. Garcia is a fan of Temptations, and she loves to be doted on. In fact, after the laser pointer, this may be her favourite thing. If you adopt this gorgeous lady, you can celebrate Black Cat Appreciation Day on Aug. 17.

If you are interested in Garcia, or maybe a cat of a different colour (or two), give the SPCA a call at 902-396-3595 or pop in for a visit.
