New Glasgow salon hopes to sell wigs at cost for people going through cancer treatment
Salon owner wants to supply an option for people fighting cancer
In a curtained-off room at Ansena Hair Salon in New Glasgow, Angela Cromwell looks at a collection of wigs on display, some of them synthetic hair, some of them real.
“This space is going to be called the Zima Wellness Wig Room,” says Cromwell, who hopes to soon be able to provide wigs at cost, on a strictly non-profit basis, for people going through chemotherapy and radiation and losing hair as a result.
“Here in Pictou County, there are a lot of people going through that,” Cromwell says, adding that for some, buying a wig isn’t easy on the pocketbook. “I just want to provide an option for them, to help people with what they’re going through.
“Losing your hair is a very personal thing.”
On the side, Cromwell sings in a four-part harmony ensemble with local artists Michael Martin, Shaun McLean and Ross MacVicar. Taking the initials from their first names, the group arrives at the M.A.R.S. Collective moniker.
The quartet will be playing a benefit on April 28 at 7 p.m. in the Second Baptist Church in New Glasgow. Tickets are $20 in advance, and $25 at the door, available at Cromwell’s salon on Provost Street. All proceeds will be going to the Zima Wellness Wig Room.
The funds raised, she said, will be used sometime in the future “to buy inventory and finish creating this space.”
She needs to make a minimum order of 50 wigs from a company in China, she said, with each one priced at $150. From there, she would turn around and sell them to local residents at cost, which could save customers money.
She hopes to be ale to customize wigs for patrons.
“If someone comes in and these do not work,” she says, sweeping a hand toward the wigs she has on display, “we can create a wig for them.”
