April is Amnesty Month

- Trecia Schell Trecia Schell is the community services librarian and branch librarian for Books by Mail. River John, Stellarton & Trenton Public Libraries

Spring-cleaning is in the air. It’s time to dust under those beds, at the back of the closet and behind the bookshelves.

You never know what treasures you may find.

If it happens to be a lost library item, please return it to the library. Anytime a lost library item is returned, the lost fee is reimbursed to a library patron. (Lost fees are simply the cost to the library to replace the item, such as purchasing a replacement book or DVD.)

Another great reason to celebrate spring – April is Amnesty Month at the library and the perfect time to clean up your library account, too. The Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library is fine free for overdue library materials during April. No overdue charges will be charged on library materials borrowed from April 1 to April 30. And we’re also accepting donations of non-perishable items for the local food bank in return for fine-forgiveness of overdue library fines of $3 per item (a can, jar, or box). Join us as we give thanks this month and give back to our communities. Coming up…

It’s the return of the everpopular Members Night with the Pictou County Naturalists on Tuesday, April 4 starting at 6:30 p.m., at the New Glasgow Library’s Community Room. All are welcome to drop by, as members share priceless pictures, stories of amazing feats, backyard adventures and tall tales from the past year.

Something new and fun for families, Stellarton Recreation & Culture is sponsoring a monthly Let’s Play, parent and tot playgroup drop-in program at the Stellarton Library with the YMCA of Pictou County.

The family-friendly program happens on the first Wednesday of the month at 10 a.m. from April 5 until July 5. Come join an active and interactive playgroup for parents/guardians and children; together we will promote socialization while increasing active motor skills through song and play.

More great ideas for recycle, reuse, and repurposing continue at the Westville Library this Wednesday April 5 at 2:30 p.m. as part of the Community Café program.

Marla Cameron from Pictou County Solid Waste will be by to share some fabulous fabric re-purposed ideas from old tshirts.

In this program, participants will learn how to make a beautiful wreath for your door.

If you have any old t-shirts on hand and a pair of scissors, please bring them along. All are welcome and light refreshments will be served.

Wondering what to do on a Saturday? We have awesome drop-in programs on all day, with Imagination, Crafty and Makerspace Saturdays at our libraries in Pictou, River John, Stellarton, Trenton and Westville. Saturday, April 8 also welcomes several Eggstravangas at the library, with some early Easter egg crafts, hunts, bingos and more.

For more information on upcoming library programs, special events and services, please drop by your local library branch, follow us on Twitter, find us on Facebook, or visit us online at www.parl.ns.ca.
