Bantam AA Selects take silver at provincial­s

The Fundy Highland Bantam AA Subway Selects wrapped up their season with a silver at provincial­s in Dartmouth on Sunday.

The Selects went 3-1 in the round robin, with their only loss being a 3-2 defeat by the eventual provincial champions Metro West Red.

The Selects opened the weekend with an impressive come from behind 4-2 win against Metro West Black. Goals were scored by Alyssa Fitt, Kara MacLean, Cassie Clarke and Taylor Long, with assists from Natalie MacKay, MacLean, Clarke and Keighan DeCoff. Goalie Kenzie O’Donnell received the player of the game award.

The Selects followed up their morning win with another tough 2-1 victory over the host Metro East Inferno with an unassisted goal by Kara MacLean and the game winner by Madison Sample, assisted by Tori MacPherson and Jenna Hickey. MacLean received player of the game.

The Selects dropped game 3 of the weekend by a score of 3-2 to Metro Red despite a great game by Alyssa Fitt, who scored both goals, with assists from MacLean, Clarke and MacPherson. Fitt received player of the

game.

The Selects played their fourth game of the weekend versus the Glace Bay Miners and punched their ticket to the finals with a 2-1 overtime win. The game winner came from Natalie MacKay with helpers from MacLean and Fitt, and the game-winning goal was scored by MacPherson unassisted. MacKay took home player of the game.

The Selects faced Metro West Red in a rematch for the provincial title on Sunday. Despite a great first period by the Selects goalie, Metro managed one goal in the first period to take the lead. The Selects rebounded in the second and outshot their opponent 11-3 in the period, but could not catch a break and find the back of the net. Metro held a 1-0 lead at the intermissi­on. Early in the third, Metro scored to make it 2-0 and shortly thereafter scored again on a questionab­le power play. They put the game away late in the third on an empty net. Kaleigh Foley received player of the game for the Selects.

In addition to the provincial silver, the Selects also took home some individual hardware with Kenzie O’Donnell being named the top goaltender of the weekend and Keighan DeCoff claiming the shooting accuracy title in the skills competitio­n.
