Volunteer Fair set for April 27 at Wellness Centre

People looking for new volunteer opportunities will have four hours to browse for the right one during a fair later this month.

A Community Volunteer Fair will be held April 27 from 4 to 8 pm. at the Pictou County Wellness Centre allowing the nonprofit organizations to roll out the welcome mat to new volunteers.

Jessica Smith with the United Way of Pictou County said this is the second year such a fair will take place and based on the success of last year, she is hoping for great things.

“Last year we had 40 organizations participating and everyone walked way with a list of volunteers,” she said. “We think we had about a hundred people come through the fair last year.”

She said the volunteer organizations that participate in the fair include charitable groups, organized sports, ground search and rescue, and others.

“We wanted the community to know about the different volunteer opportunities out there,” said Smith. “We also wanted to disperse the myth that volunteering is a big commitment. It could be just a day, one event or it can be long term. Those options are there. There are a variety of opportunities out there.”

The event is free of charge to both the participants and people attending. It is open to any organization in need of volunteers.
