Activities going well at 55+ Club

The monthly meeting of the New Glasgow 55+ Seniors’ Club was held April 5 at the fire hall. President Kathleen Campbell welcomed 50 members and all joined in the Seniors Prayer and 55ers Song. Jane Ivaney accompanie­d on keyboard.

Secretary Carol Johnson read the minutes from last month and treasurer Dolly Tortola gave the financial report. Both were approved. Activity reports followed. All are going well with room for more players. Bowling on Wednesday morning at Heather Lanes can use more players, as do bridge and cribbage. Club Bingo will be held April 21 instead of Good Friday. Cards are doing very well despite all the snowstorms causing cancellati­ons. Membership is still growing.

Announceme­nts

The Salvation Army, Westville, will hold a meal, open to everyone, on April 19 between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. It is free but donations will be accepted.

The club’s funding for the area’s new seniors centre is going very well.

The next bake sale will be held on May 6, at 10 a.m. outside Tim Hortons in Highland Square Mall.

Pictou Seniors Club will be presenting a Fun Day May 27, 10a.m.-4 p.m. Other seniors are invited.

The 55+ Club spring dinner will occur June 6 in Plymouth Fire Hall. Club bus trip to Halifax on June 19, for members.

Club members will be serving a barbecue at Sobeys, Westside, July 23 and 24 weather permitting, part of the effort to fundraise for the new Seniors Centre.

New Glasgow Recreation will have a bus trip to Neptune Theatre for the play “Once.” Price $86. Contact New Glasgow Recreation for tickets. Kathleen and Tom Campbell will attend the Federation Meeting in Truro May 2 and 3.

The Lottery Tree draw’s lucky ticket was held by Pookei Cormier, Trenton.

The afternoon draws were won by Carol Johnson and Margaret Casey.

Everyone sang the birthday song to the April kids.

Next month the food committee is Beatrice Colburn, Donnie Turnbull and June MacLellan.

The afternoon speaker was Courtney Masey from the Superstore on nutrition. Topic: Healthy eating for healthy aging. Cooking for one or two. Lunch followed.
