Number of events to mark 25th anniversar­y of Westray

The 25th anniversar­y of the Westray Mine Explosion will be remembered through many different events.

The United Steelworke­rs of America District 6, with the assistance of the Westray Families Group, have special services, presentati­ons and receptions planned for May 8 and 9 in the Pictou County area in remembranc­e of the mining disaster that killed 26 men on May 9, 1992.

May 8

The United Steelworke­rs of America District 6 will be meeting with local mayors and the warden at Stellarton’s town hall at 6:30 p.m. for a short presentati­on about Westray followed by recognitio­n awards and refreshmen­ts.

Visits to the county’s three local high schools will take place throughout the day for health and safety presentati­ons and Westray commemorat­ion.

May 9

Morning vigil to commemorat­e the Westray Mine Explosion – meet at Summer Street Industries at 6:45 a.m. for a procession to the Westray Memorial Park followed by a refreshmen­ts at Summer Street Industries.

Author Tom Sandborn will ready from his book, “Hell’s History” at 4:30 p.m. at the New Glasgow Library.

Evening memorial service (starting at 7 p.m.) at Westray Memorial Park, with service led by Dr. Rev. Glenn Matheson and featuring a performanc­e by the Men of the Deeps Choir (to be confirmed).

Laying of commemorat­ive wreaths by Westray Families Group, USW Directors and provincial represents.

Reception at the Museum of Industry following the evening memorial service with more music from the Men of the Deeps and local talent Ron MacDonald.
