Ground search team helps police look for stolen items
Volunteers from Pictou County Ground Search and Rescue were combing an area near the Maranatha Bible Church on Abercrombie Road early Thursday evening as part of a police investigation into multiple thefts.
New Glasgow Regional Police Const. Ken MacDonald said they were looking for both evidence and items reported missing.
“They’re instrumental in terms of they’ve done numerous evidentiary searches, (they’re a) very valuable resource for law enforcement,” MacDonald said.
Police arrested a 22-year-old man from Stellarton on April 26 around 4 p.m. in relation to multiple thefts from vehicles early Wednesday morning in the west side of New Glasgow.
He was charged with possession of stolen property, theft, trespassing at night and fraud.
They’re also investigating a home invasion on the west side, which police said also happened early Wednesday.
A release said the home was
entered while the family was sleeping and various items were stolen, including a purse. No one was injured in the incident. They’ve issued an arrest warrant for a 22-year-old man in relation to that investigation.
MacDonald said they’re treating the thefts and home invasion as connected.
He stressed the importance of reporting to police if people
notice items missing from their vehicles.
“In most cases, vehicles were unlocked, so it’s very important… that we lock our valuables and (keep) valuables out of sight.”
New Glasgow police’s major crime and forensic identification units as well as the RCMP’s canine unit have also been involved in the investigation.
