ALS WalkStrong event planned for June 3
The Committee for the Pictou County ALS WalkStrong 2017 (formerly known as the Pictou County Walk for ALS) is busy making plans for the annual event, which will be held June 3 in Westville.
ALS (also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease) is a rapidly progressive and fatal neuromuscular disease that causes the degeneration of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Eighty per cent of those diagnosed will pass away within two to five years.
“The committee would like to encourage people to team up with family, friends, and coworkers to walk strong for those who are no longer able to do so,” said organizer Sara Watters.
She said funds raised will be used by the ALS Society of NB and NS to assist with their equipment loan program, client services, and to support worldclass research happening in the Maritimes.
Watters said the local walk recognizes the tremendous support of the people of Pictou County over the past five years and hopes to build on this success.
“More than just a fundraising event, the walk is a celebration of hope for those living with ALS and a celebration of lives lived for the family and friends of those who have lost their fight to ALS.”
Registration for the walk will take place at 9:30 a.m. at the Westville Civic Centre, with the event kicking off at 10:30 a.m. with opening ceremonies followed by the walk at Victoria Park. As in the past, the event will feature entertainment, a barbecue and door prizes.
