Pictou County YMCA hosting third annual indoor triathlon
Building on the success of last year’s event, organizers are preparing once again for the YMCA Strong Kids Indoor Triathlon.
Plans are underway to support both youth and adult categories this year at the event, which will be held on Sunday, May 28.
The triathlon event is open to Y members and non-members. It is being presented through partnering by the YMCA, the Y-Tri club, and the Johnny Miles Running Events.
The sport of triathlon is growing rapidly in Pictou County, with a very active Tri Club based at the YMCA. This group meets regularly for training, social events, and fundraising. They will be involved in this year’s Indoor Tri through participation and volunteering.
Member Jenn Chabassol will be competing for the third time, and she will be supporting her two children as they participate in their age group events.
“Being active is one of the most important pieces of raising healthy children,” she said in a release. “They are the reason I work hard, take chances and gain confidence, and in turn, I see the same work ethic and confidence growing in them. Participating in activities like the YMCA Indoor triathlon will make them stronger and happier children.”
The triathlon will start with the youngest participants first, children 12 years and under. Swim heats begin at 8 a.m. and will be varying distances, adapted to age and ability of participants.
Following the swim, children will exit the pool and hop on their bicycles for a designated distance around the Wellness Centre. Once the bike route is completed, they will run, or walk a similar marked loop on PCWC premises.
Family members are encouraged and welcomed to support participants along the way. Medals and T-shirts will be awarded to all.
The adult heats will start when youth swimmers are done.
There are two distance options: “Standard” and “Sprint,” in order to meet the goals of all swimmers. Once the swim is complete, participants will exit the pool and enter the gym to complete a designated spin bike challenge. Following this, triathletes will run outside along a marked course, using low traffic areas in the Stellarton Industrial Park.
Organizers say the event is a blend of fun, fitness, and friendship, while raising funds for the YMCA Strong Kids Program. Online registration is required through Race Roster, and is open until May 24.
