Summer’s around the corner

- Trecia Schell

As the weather warms up, thoughts turn to summer programs and outdoor activities at the library.

The Pictou Library is host to the Women on Wheels (WoW) program on Friday mornings at 10 a.m. Women are invited to connect, stop in, enjoy short bike rides and learn new skills.

Guest speakers are often invited for a short presentation (on topics such as basic bike repairs). For more information and to register, please contact Michelle at Pictou Recreation (902-485-4372).

Along with the new Nordic walking poles, now available to borrow from a Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library branch near you, two free Nordic pole walking instructional sessions will be held on Friday, June 2 in Pictou County, with Bill and Esther VanGorder of Nordic Walking Nova Scotia.

The course registration is filling up. The Nordic Walking Leaders Course will be held the morning of June 2 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Pictou Library. This three-hour clinic will teach participants how to instruct others in Nordic walking. To register, please contact the Pictou Library (902-485-5021).

The Learn to Nordic Pole Walk workshop being held the afternoon of June 2 (and hosted by Pictou Parks and Recreation) is now full. Please dress for the weather (we will be indoors and out), and wear good walking shoes. Many thanks to the Nova Scotia Heart & Stroke Foundation and the Walkabilities grant program for sponsoring this library program and service.

Coming up this week at the library, we have two interesting early evening programs about our community. Join us at the New Glasgow Library on Wednesday, May 24 at 7 p.m., for a presentation with Robert H. Meyer, on celebrating 300 years of service: the Masonic Tercentennial. Freemasonry (A.F. & A.M.), as we know it today, was founded 300 years ago on June 24, 1717 and came to Pictou County in 1785. In the presentation, Meyer will be tracing the origin and principles of the fraternity from its legendary roots to present day. All are welcome.

Join us for the National Film Board Film Club screening at the River John Library on Thursday, May 24 at 6:15 p.m. where An Idea of Canada, a documentary inspired by Glenn Gould’s radio show, is the feature film.

Governor General Adrienne Clarkson and her husband, John Ralston Saul, “embark on a journey to Canada’s three seacoasts, encountering every kind of weather as they travel by boat, small plane, snowmobile, pickup truck and canoe. … This film offers a meditation on the myth and reality of the rugged landscape that symbolizes Canada for most people – yet which few of us will ever see.”

Summer’s around the corner, and we say ‘goodbye!’ to Sunday afternoon hours at the New Glasgow Library until next school year starting in September. Also in preparation for some late spring cleaning, the Westville Library will be closing early on Thursday, May 25 at 5 p.m. and remain closed until the morning of Tuesday, May 30. (The library is having the floors cleaned and waxed.) We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. During this time, library services are available online and the library return drop box will be open.

Making a return this summer, the Big Book Club will be back again starting June 1 (for ages 14+).

Read a book, and share with us your recommendations – liked it, loved it or give it a pass. Each shared book recommendation will earn a ballot to enter to win a prize. There will be draws at the end of the months of June, July and August, and several grand prize draws to be held on Sept. 1, 2017.

Many thanks to the generous support of Adopt-a-Library, this year’s grand prize draws include an adult bike and two gift certificates for a weekend stay at the Holiday Inn in Stellarton. What’s your favorite, must-read book? We’d like to know.

For more information on upcoming library programs, special events and services, please drop by your local library branch, follow us on Twitter, find us on Facebook, or visit us online at www.parl.ns.ca.
