Cold weather brings hungry fish
Pictou County Rivers’ Association’s annual Fisherama held Saturday
“One good thing about this weather, it keeps the fish biting,” said Alfred White on Saturday morning.
The setting was the ponds of Trenton Park, where the Pictou County Rivers Association (PCRA) held its 19th annual Children’s Fisherama in spite of cold weather that kept some people away during the threehour fish-fest.
White is the president of the PRCA, the group that works to restore and help protect local waterways in the interest of conservation.
The fisherama is a means of getting young people involved with the time-honoured sport, he added.
“We try to engage the youth,” White said. “We put some big fish in there and they get out there, all watching each other catch fish.”
Thanks to the Fraser’s Mills Fish Hatchery in Antigonish County, a total of 100 “big fish,” as White calls them (up to a foot long), and hundreds
of smaller fish (six to eight inches), were placed in the
ponds in advance of Saturday’s event. “The numbers were down this year because of the wind
and the cold,” White said, adding that close to 200 children registered for Saturday from ages four to 15 years old.
No fishing license was required.
“But it was good fishing weather.”
There were prizes for the three biggest fish caught, as well as prizes for anyone who caught one of five tagged fish (two of them were reeled in).
The event also serves as a fundraiser for the association with a 50/50 draw and food items sold to the hungry participants.
White said the organization has about 45 members, but are always looking for more.
