James Arthur “Jim” Russell

NEW GLASGOW – James Arthur “Jim” Russell, 92, Northumber­land Veteran’s Unit, SHMH, Pictou, formerly of New Glasgow, passed away peacefully, Saturday, May 20, 2017 in the Unit.

Born in New Glasgow, he was a son of the late Stephen and Sara (MacGregor) Russell. During the Second World War, Jim served in the Canadian Army. Following, he was employed with the former Eastern Woodworker­s, New Glasgow. Prior to retirement, he was employed as a welder with the former TrentonWor­ks and parttime driver for Smith’s Taxi. Jim enjoyed the company of his grandsons, especially the ability to beat them at pool until turning 90.

He looked forward to Zaki’s magic tricks, conversati­ons with Jody and going for drives with his brother, Bee.

Jim enjoyed playing his guitar and singing, often entertaini­ng his family and friends. He will be remembered for his strong work ethic, patience, sense of humour

and sitting in his favourite chair with the family dog, Bella, by his side.

Surviving are children, Dale Russell and Debbie Russell, New Glasgow; Donna Russell, Truro; grandchild­ren, Joddat “Jody” Rafih, Toronto and Zaki Rafih, Truro; sister, Marion Kelly, New Glasgow; numerous nieces and nephews.

Beside his parents, he was predecease­d by his wife, Lee (Shanahan); sisters, Edna Henderson and Margaret Kelly; brothers, George, William “Bee”, Robert “Bob” and John “Jack”; nephew, George.

The family will receive visitors 6-8 p.m. today in P. & K. MacDonald Funeral Home, New Glasgow.

The Russell family wish to thank Earth Angels, especially Sheri Roy, and the staff at the Northumber­land Veteran’s Unit for the excellent care Jim received.
