-

Approximately $12,200 was raised locally as part of this year’s Gutsy Walk, which occurs in communities across the country and collects funds for Crohn’s and Colitis Canada.

Registration captain Lana MacEachern said the event, which took place on Sunday starting at Carmichael Park in New Glasgow, went well, with about 90 walkers and volunteers involved.

She said it’s nice to see an increasing number of young people participating in the event, and noted the total was approximate with pledges still coming in online.

One of those young people was Rebecca DeCoste, who was named the honourary chair this year.

Her team raised more than $1,200 this year.

“I felt honoured to be picked About 90 people were involved in the local Gutsy Walk, which started at Carmichael Park in New Glasgow on Sunday.

for something I care about and I think there should be more awareness for,” said DeCoste, who celebrated her 13th birthday on Sunday, too.

Money raised at Gutsy Walks goes towards initiatives from Crohn’s and Colitis Canada,

such as a research study to identify triggers for Crohn’s disease.

The charity aims to find cures as well as improving the lives of those affected by the diseases that disrupt the ability to digest food, absorb nutrition and eliminate waste in a healthy manner.
