NRHS boys repeat as provincial champs

Five gold won at track and field meet

- BY CAROL DUNN

It was a tight race.

Dan Stewart was slightly ahead of the Cobequid Education Centre runner who had been in front for part of the lap, as they ran down the last stretch toward the finish line at the NSSAF 2017 Track and Field Provincial Championship.

“I felt the CEC runner coming up behind me and he was gasping,” said the sprinter from Northumberland Regional High School, who crossed the finish line a mere 1.02 seconds ahead.

Stewart ran the final leg of the intermediate boys 4X400 m relay, to finish with a time of 3:39.49. The CEC team clocked in at 3:40.51 for second place.

The NRHS team of Stewart, Duncan Cameron, Luc Corbin and Brett Corbin successfully defended the title won by their school last year, with almost the same team. Brett Corbin ran this year’s race instead of Eric Hughes, who moved up to the senior division.

Stewart said it was a great race overall, even though they

didn’t achieve a goal of breaking the provincial record, with a time just four seconds off. The record of 3:35.4 was set by Prince Andrew high school in 1984.

The gold medal was one of five won by Pictou County athletes during the championship, which took place on Friday and Saturday at Beazley Field in Dartmouth.

Brett Corbin was the champion in intermediate boys long

jump, Lauren Quann of Pictou Academy won the senior girls high jump, Myla Briand of PA claimed the junior girls hurdles title, Tatum McLean of NRHS was crowned champion in the senior girls shot put, and Jenna Reid of PA won the intermediate girls javelin with a new personal best distance of 38.99 m.

“It’s an incredible feeling,” said Reid. “It was my goal since last year to make it back to provincials again and place in the top three.”

Last year she placed fourth at the NSSAF competition.

“I hope to continue to improve in my training throughout the season and see more personal bests as the season progresses.”

While the school track and field season ended with the provincial championship, Reid will continue to compete during the summer season with Pictou County Athletics.

Other local results from Saturday’s competition include:

Quann of PA placed second in senior girls javelin (36.64 m) and fourth in shot put (9.55 m).

Heath Miller of North Nova Education Centre finished in third behind Quann in the javelin throw (34.58m).

Tatum McLean’s first-place throw in senior girls shot put was 10.76 m.

Brett Corbin tied for second in intermediate boys high jump with a judged height of 1.84 m.

Breanna Sandluck and Raymond Simpson, both of NNEC, won bronze in the senior division of the 3000 m run. Allie Sandluck of NNEC was fourth in the intermediate girls 3000 m race.

Lauren MacLeod of NNEC placed fourth in intermediate girls 200 m dash, while teammate Broden Decoff was also fourth in the intermediate boys division of the same race.
