Brand new edition of drag show coming to Glasgow Square

Drag show with dark and happy moments, songs and dance and lots of laughs bringing latest edition to Glasgow Square

Jake Chisholm wants to see people embracing who they are. That’s one of the messages he hopes to convey with the drag show he has created with Shaun McLean.

Jake and Shaun’s Big Gay Affair was first introduced last year in New Glasgow, and has since travelled to Tatamagouche and Wolfville for performances. It’s now returning where it started for a show and after-party that will kick off Pride Week.

“…Because it’s home and it’s our hometown show, we’re trying to make it bigger and grander than it was last time. We want it to be over the top and fun and be that fluctuation of emotions,” Chisholm said, adding there are dark, happy, and “sexy and sassy moments” in the show.

Anyone who attended last year’s production can expect an entirely different show, Chisholm said, though with most of the same cast – including Chisholm, McLean, Miranda Wrights, Stevie Marie, and others. He said they’ve amped up their video elements, noting a particularly powerful video that speaks to the struggles of the LGBTQ community.

“We have to keep it fresh for ourselves too because we want to have fun with it and giggle and laugh.”

There will also be a lot of live singing, with Chisholm noting it will his first time singing solo since he was 13 years old. It will also include Miss Carla’s Dance elite team.

He hopes the show instils a sense of endless possibilities and a desire to be kind.

“I want them to feel liberated. For the people that do consider themselves part of LGBTQ community, I want them to know that it’s safe and it’s fun and you can be who you want to be in Pictou County.”

He suggests the show offers freedom for an evening.

“There’s nothing else going on in the world at that moment. That two hours that you’re there, you’re on cloud nine. And I think people really want that.”

Jake and Shaun’s Big Gay Affair takes over the Glasgow Square Theatre on June 24, with the show beginning at 8 p.m. Tickets are $30 in advance and include the after-party, set to start at 10:15 p.m. They’re available at the box office and Ticketpro.ca. They also have another show lined up for July 29 at the Marigold Centre in Truro.
