Creative Pictou County seeking members to help expand sector
A non-profit organization that aims to support and promote the local creative sector is holding an information session and launch event this week.
Creative Pictou County is introducing their new website as well as inviting people to become members of the organization.
“We’ve been really aggressively moving the organization forward and wanted to report into the creative sector,” chair Troy Greencorn said about why the group decided to hold the event.
The group also saw it as an opportunity to have representatives from the province, including deputy minister Tracey Taweel of the Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage, speak about the Culture Action Plan, which outlines government priorities over the next few years as it relates to the creative sector.
Greencorn notes the creative sector definition is very broad, encompassing not only artists but also libraries and museums. He said one of the needs identified during community consultations for Creative Pictou County a few years ago was more information about funding and opportunities, adding that this presentation goes along with that.
Greencorn also said the organization will have more details on an educational initiative soon to be offered in Pictou County in partnership with the Department of Labour and Advanced Education.
In addition, the evening will feature live music, refreshments, a cash bar and a chance to mingle with people in the creative sector.
Creative Pictou County, in partnership with the Town of New Glasgow and New Glasgow’s Art At Night, is inviting people at the event to help paint community pianos destined for Murdoch and Carmichael Parks this month.
The event is taking place on June 8 at Glasgow Square, beginning at 6 p.m. and presentations starting at 7 p.m.
