Antique car club hosts annual show and shine

Philip Hughes remembers the first time he saw her.

“As far as I know, it sat under a tree for about 20 years,” said the Churchville man, speaking of his 1966 Mustang, one of the numerous vintage cars and trucks at the Pictou County Antique Car Club’s (PCCAC) show and shine held over the weekend.

A mechanic by trade, Hughes bought the Mustang three years ago in the Annapolis Valley and went about turning a rusting hollow shell of its former self into a gleaming orange muscle car.

“I did all the work myself, even painted it myself,” he said.

He had to weld the floor panels, install a vinyl top, do some body work, splash some paint on it and who knows how many other tasks, big and small?

It’s his first antique automobile and he’s proud of her.

“My car attraction is something that started when I was very young, and it continues,” he said. ”I don’t drive it in the winter, but all summer, I take it whenever I need to go.”

By 11 a.m Saturday, more than 100 cars had registered for the show and shine, PCACC president Jim Wall said.

Sunday’s numbers were expected to top Saturday’s. “It’s usually our biggest day,” said Wall.

The club has been holding the show and shine for more than 40 years, and this weekend was the first in a few years where the weather gods were on their side.

“It’s been about four years since we had two nice days.”

Wall said the people who share a love for vintage cars become familiar with one another, as they all travel to many of the same show and shines to share their passion.

“A lot of these people are from other areas of the province,” he said, as he surveyed the grounds at the Scott Weeks Sports Complex.

“These cars rekindle all the old memories.”

Because the antique car club is non-profit, all proceeds are donated back to the community.

Hospital foundations at the Aberdeen and at St. Martha’s in Antigonish will benefit as will a local early childhood intervention group and the Pictou County Christmas Fund.
