Making it count
Members of leadership class put on fun event at Pictou Landing school
Student leadership class at NNEC chosen in Make 150 Count campaign to make positive impact in community
Cameron Smith and a Grade 12 leadership class at North Nova Education Centre put $150 to good use on Monday.
Smith, one of 14 students in the class, received $150 from RBC Stellarton branch as part of an initiative called Make 150 Count, which is intended to challenge young Canadians “to make a positive impact in their communities.”
With the RBC funds as well as donations from local businesses, the class visited Pictou Landing First Nation School on Monday for a barbecue and a morning full of games for students in grades 1 through 6.
“I thought the schools in town get a lot of stuff … and these guys (are) a little further out, and they don’t kinda get all that stuff. So let’s bring the fun to them. Let’s show them that love that they deserve. That’s why we decided we’re going to come up here and have a bunch of really good times with these kids.”
The money went towards supplies for the games, with food donated by Atlantic Superstore and drinks and cups donated by Sobeys. The rest of the funds are going to go toward planting a tree in the community “to represent the connection between the two schools,” Smith said.
NNEC leadership teacher Fred MacKenzie said the course encourages students to act as role models.
“They get to understand that everything’s not about them, how it’s important to give to others, to do for others,” he said, adding that the class visiting the Pictou Landing school put time in after school to bake and decorate cupcakes for the event.
She said she’s grateful for the entire experience – for both schools allowing the event to happen, for RBC and the help of her fellow students.
