Rolling out the red carpet for Canada

Pre-Canada Day in New Glasgow will include: water, music, fireworks and more

-

The Town of New Glasgow is once again getting ready to kick off celebrations for Canada’s birthday with a full slate of events planned for June 30.

This year will be extra special thanks to some additional provincial dollars the Town of New Glasgow and Riverfront Jubilee were able to secure through a grant in honour of Canada’s 150th anniversary.

The $30,000 combined with some in-kind work by the town will provide activities that organizers hope will leave lasting memories of this milestone birthday for years after.

“We are excited to make Canada 150 celebrations in New Glasgow both memorable and meaningful,” says New Glasgow Mayor Nancy Dicks. “There will be both unique moments and lasting legacies.”

On June 30, there will be kids events from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. said acting program and events manager Paula Irving featuring water-themed bouncy houses.

It will include a big water slide and another water pool for smaller children to splash around in.

“It’ll be a much more interactive day for the kids whereas before it’s been sort of like street chalk and things,” she said. “This time if it’s a hot sunny day, kids are going to have a blast going down the water slide and playing in the pool.”

There will also be food trucks on site at the Glasgow Square Theatre area.

Right now there are flags flying in honour of Canada downtown and on the Town Hall with special Canada 150 logos.

On June 30 there will be a flag raising as usual, director of community economic development Geralyn MacDonald said.

“We’re doing the traditional official flag raising, but combining that with an opening ceremonies that will have guest speakers. In addition to that we will have some youth and multicultural entertainment.”

On stage that evening they have some great local talent including Alert the Medic, said communications director Kim Dickson.

“We are thrilled to have them

as the headliner entertainment and so proud of the calibre of music Pictou County has to offer,” Dickson said. “We are also looking forward to Mike & The MacPhersons and the great neighbourhood/block party atmosphere they will create along with the youth and other multicultural entertainment.”

The night will end with a bang with a fireworks show over the East River.
