Add Dale Hawerchuk to the long list of NHL greats who have appeared at the annual Scott Weeks Sports Celebrity golf tournament.

The Toronto native and hockey hall of famer, now a major junior coach with the OHL’s Barrie Colts, will be the marquee guest July 20-21 at the annual golf tournament fundraiser, being held again this year at Abercrombie Golf & Country Club.

It is the 23rd edition of the event.

A 1981 first overall draft pick by the Winnipeg Jets, Hawerchuk is considered one of the greatest players of the 1980s, even if he performed in the shadow of Wayne Gretzky and the rival Edmonton Oilers.

“Here in the east, we maybe never realized how good Dale Hawerchuk was,” said Ed ‘Pickle’ MacLaren, who cochairs the event along with Marty Malcolm.

“I met him at an event five or six years ago. He’s a terrific guy and will fit in well here.”

The primary purpose of the event is to generate funds for the Scott Weeks Bursary Program, which to date has supported almost 80 alumni of the Weeks Major Midget and Junior hockey programs.

Part of the proceeds will also used to purchase equipment for the Weeks Major Midgets and the Junior A Crushers.

A total of 36 teams – more than 150 players – are expected to take part in the tournament.

“If you ask people under 40, they might not have heard of him (but) a lot of the people who play in the tournament are
