Walk for muscular dystrophy to be held June 24

-

A walk planned for next weekend benefits children like Isaac Fraser of Central West River.

The four-year-old has muscular dystrophy, and he and his family are this year’s ambassadors of the Pictou County Walk for MD on June 24.

“Isaac is the happiest little boy on a daily basis, despite his everyday challenges. He uses a small wheelchair to zip around and a walker to practise bearing weight on his legs. He is happiest swimming in his pool and playing with his dog,” said his mother Sarah.

“We are grateful to Muscular Dystrophy Canada for their support as new equipment is needed as Isaac grows, and they are always there to help. We are excited to take part in another Walk for MD this June and look forward to another great turnout.”

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the walk, a national event for MDC, with 12 walks taking place in Atlantic Canada between June and September, three of them in Nova Scotia.

The local walk takes place at the Scotsburn Fire Hall, and will be followed by a barbecue hosted by members of the Scotsburn and West River fire departments. Local fire departments are invited to bring fire trucks as part of an emergency vehicles display.

Muscular dystrophy is the name of a group of progressive genetic muscle disorders that are characterized by the progressive weakening and wasting of the muscles that control body movement. It can lead to a shortened life expectancy, and no cure exists.

“Monies raised through the Walk for Muscular Dystrophy fund research for a cure and helps provide services, mobility equipment, assistive devices and education. Your support is truly appreciated,” said revenue development manager Rebecca Bourbonnais.

The walk takes place on June 24 at noon, with registration beginning at 11 a.m.
