Trenton preparing for day of fun activities

-

Kelcey LeBlanc and Hilary MacInnis both grew up in Trenton and have fond memories of summer activities at Trenton Park.

Now as employees for the town this summer, they’re looking forward to helping with this weekend’s Summer’s Here Celebration – a longtime tradition in the town.

“It’s a great event for the kids to come to,” LeBlanc said.

One of the aspects of this festival that make it special is how families gather each year to take part, she said.

MacInnis said she’s been coming since she was little. One of the big draws for the festival as well as to the park in general has always been the swimming, she said.

Robyn Meyer, recreation programmer for Trenton, said they are hoping to build on a few new activities they brought in last year including the preschool playland for children under the age of five.

“We had a really good turnout last year and positive feedback,” she said.

Some of the activities for that this year will include a bounce house, ball pit, ball hoppers, slides, ride-ons, water table and a sandbox with toys.

Other activities in the park

Saturday will include wagon rides, face painting and bounce houses.

The pool will also be open from 1 to 5 p.m. and will be free with admission to the Summer’s Here Celebration.

The event typically draws a few hundred people to the park, Meyer said. Organizations take part to help make it a success including the Weeks Jr. A Crushers who do a hockey shootout booth.

The library also is expected to be back with a booth as well as the United Way’s Bikes for Kids.

“It’s a really great event. We’ve

been doing it for many years – long before I even started here,” Meyer said. “We have a lot of different families with different age groups, yet they all seem to find something to enjoy.”

The Summer’s Here Celebration will run from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday with a rain date of Sunday. Admission is $5/child. Parents and children under 2 admitted for free. Concessions will be available on site.

In celebration of Pride Week there will be a Tie-Dye in the Park booth on site, which serves as a fundraiser for the PC Rainbow Community. That event runs from noon to 5 p.m.
