There will be fireworks in Pictou at 7 a.m. on July 1.

Darlene MacDonald of the tall ships committee said there was some discussion as to when would be the best time to host a fireworks display considering all of the other Canada Day events taking place in the county on this day.

“We want people to attend everything that is happening in the county,” she said. “So they can start their day off with breakfast and fireworks at the Quay, go to the New Glasgow Farmers Market, catch the parade in Westville and return to the Pictou for its market and tall ships.”

MacDonald said the PIctou Fire Department will be setting off the morning fireworks in the Hector Heritage Quay yard followed by a pancake breakfast on the site from 7 to 9 a.m.

There was some discussion about having the fireworks at dawn but no one could agree to a set time, she said. Having it before breakfast also allows people to continue on with their day with very little interruption.

There will also be an element of surprise with it because no one is sure what to expect.

“Some people say you will be able to see a lot of it,” she said, adding that it is possible that Pictou will host the first Canada 150 fireworks display on July 1st across the country. “It is something unique and it has never been done before.”

Five tall ships will be arriving in Pictou Friday and open to the public at Pier C from noon to 5 p.m. Entertainment, children’s activities and concessions will continue Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. as well.
