In celebration of Canada’s 150th

-

Happy 150th birthday Canada! As Canadians, we are so fortunate to live in a country that is acclaimed as one of the best countries in the world. Pioneers, early and current, have toiled tirelessly to build Canada from its early days as a colony to modern times.

We applaud our aboriginal peoples, African Canadians, early French and English explorers, the Loyalists and the many newcomers who helped sketch the landscape to Canada’s first birthday, July 1, 1867 and now our 150th. Our achievers footprints from all walks of life are impacted at home and abroad. We have cause to celebrate so many of their achievements.

Along the way, Canada has witnessed its share of crisis, war and tragedy. They include: early trade and religious conflicts, the Seven Year’s War, War of 1812-1814, rebellions within the Canadas of the 1830s, the fight for responsible government, the Louis Riel struggles, World War(s) conscription debates and Canada’s involvement with international disputes to its partnership with the League of Nations, the United Nations, NATO and other encompassing alliances.

Correspondingly, Canada faced an economic depression in the 1930s, an FLQ uprising in the 1960s a plethora of constitutional battles in the ensuing years, a struggle for equal rights and a few referendums, all in an attempt to define ourselves.

These pivotal times in history have transformed Canada to what it is today and serve as a poignant reminder of the strength, perseverance and resilience of the Canadian character.

Through our collective phases of development, we have won for ourselves nationhood, autonomy, responsible government, basic freedoms and rights, and recognition that Canadians have contributed profoundly to the rule of law and the cultural mosaic of this great nation. Remarkably, the guiding principles under Section 91 of the Constitution Act, 1867, relating to Peace, Order and Good Government have stood the test of time since Confederation. These principles combined with our Fundamental Freedoms as outlined in the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms have distinguished our nation as a vanguard of influential values and inspiration for other nations to emulate.

On this our 150th birthday, let us all take time to reflect upon and commemorate the richness and diversity of our Canadian heritage. Let us celebrate Canada’s contributions to the sciences, the arts and all our humanities.

We are an impressive country of growth, diplomacy, vision, entrepreneurial spirit and strong work ethic, while maintaining a sense of togetherness in good and challenging times. The fabrics of the land are strong, vibrant and colourful for all to see.

We are a young country, yet rich in history and culture. Our greatest ambassadors are the people. And so fellow Canadians, from sea to sea and coast to coast, true patriot love and glowing hearts we stand on guard for thee! Happy Birthday Canada!
