-

Julie MacDonald is expecting about 400 seniors to converge on the Town of Trenton for three days next week during the Pictou County Seniors Festival. “We’re trying to keep seniors active and involved in the community — out doing activities and meeting people,” she said. MacDonald said seniors are able to select which events they want to participate in, with a wide range of activities, from card games to bowling. “Everyone seems to love it,” said the festival organizer. “It’s a favourite activity of summer to come to.” The 29th annual festival starts on Thursday with Auction 45s at the Trenton Rink from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday’s events include bowling at the Heather Lanes from 9 to 11 a.m., with the rest of the day’s offerings taking place at the Trenton Rink. The opening ceremonies are at 11:30 a.m., followed by the UCT Barbecue at noon and entertainment from 1 to 2 p.m. Bingo is scheduled for 2 to 4 p.m., with cribbage from 7 to 9 p.m. On Saturday, activities start at 9 a.m. with a Walkabout at Trenton Park and darts at the Trenton Friendly Group, followed by events at the Trenton Rink. These include entertainment — from fiddlers to country music bands — scheduled from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and the Kinsmen pork chop dinner at noon. Washer toss starts at 2:30 p.m. The festivities wrap up with a social and dance from 7 to 11 p.m. Seniors wishing to take part in the festival are able to register at the Trenton, Stellarton, Westville and Pictou town halls until Friday, or at the Trenton Park office until Aug. 4.
