Giant fabric and yarn sale Saturday to benefit African grandmothers
What could be better than a giant fabric and yarn sale with bargain prices for the many knitters, quilters, hookers and crafters along the North Shore? The second annual Tatamagouche Fabric and Yarn Sale will be held Saturday, Aug. 19, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Sedgwick Memorial Church, 310 Hwy 6, Tatamagouche.
The Tata Fabric and Yarn Sale is a win-win event. Fabric and yarn are available at fabulous bargain prices. Proceeds from the sale benefit the Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign, supporting African grandmothers caring for millions of children orphaned by AIDS.
“We have a team of enthusiastic volunteers and have received gorgeous donations of fabric and yarn from many community members.
“People enjoy clearing out unneeded fabrics and yarns for a good cause. Then they come to the sale and buy more,” says organizer Barb Harris, who was thrilled with the success of last year’s sale.
Harris, from River John, and Jane Earle, a summer cottager and member of the HRM Bay Area Grandmothers group, decided to organize the fabric and yarn sale in Tata, modelled on a similar sale in Halifax. “The Grandmothers’ Fabric and Yarn sale in Halifax has
been a huge success,” says Earle.
“With all the creative people on the North Shore, we thought Tatamagouche would be the perfect place for a similar sale.”
Last year’s sale in Tatamagouche raised over $1,300. The Grandmothers to Grandmothers Campaign is a project of the Stephen Lewis Foundation.
Canadian grandmothers’ groups partner with grassroots grandmothers’ groups in Africa to meet a range of urgent needs, including gardening supplies, grief counselling, health care, nutritious food, micro-credit grants and school fees.
In 10 years, Canadian grandmothers have raised over $25 million to support the needs of African grandmothers and their grandchildren, with special attention to the needs of women and girls.
