Pictou Fisheries Pool in the process of regular maintenance
The Pictou Fisheries Pool is out of commission until Sept. 5, as it undergoes regular maintenance, but when it reopens, those who enjoy diving are in for a treat.
Part of this year’s maintenance is a series of improvements to the high diving board – which has needed repairs since earlier this year. When it becomes available for use again in September, the board’s base will be reinforced in a manner similar to the low diving board.
“This time around, our high diving board required some work, since it’s been out of commission for quite some time,” said Michelle Young, recreation coordinator with the Town of Pictou. “The high dive board is going to be back in action after this closure. It was just time for some work on it.”
The high diving board is an original fixture that has been around since the pool’s opening in 1980. Other than the repairs to the high diving board, Young said maintenance going on this year since Aug. 15 is the usual routine work that goes on when Pictou closes down the facility every summer.
“We’re typically closed for two to three weeks to get maintenance work done,” said Young. Aside from the repairs to the high diving board, she said most of the regular maintenance this year specifically entails painting and cleaning of the facility.
Young anticipates a busy season at the pool, this coming fall. The Pictou Fisheries Pool will being providing school swimming lessons for Grade 2 and 3 students.
“We also have our regular swimming lessons, which begin in September. We’re booking those now, and they’re filling up,” said Young.
The Town of Pictou will also be implementing some new programming at the pool this coming season.
Although specific details weren’t available, Young said at least three or four new programs are to be offered at the pool, all focusing on improving specific swimming methods.
“This is new, and we hope to get some responses on the new workshops,” said Young.
“They will be focusing on specialty swimming techniques, like, say a workshop devoted to teaching (swimming) strokes – that will be one.”
