Splish splash

New Westville park opens today

- BY AMANDA JESS WESTVILLE

Wendy Bourque and Dave Dignan stand on the dry sidelines as squealing and laughing children run through streams of water at Westville’s new splash park. The two rotary club members watch a test run before the new gathering spot in Acadia Park opens on Saturday, and it looks like their hard work is appreciated as kids flock over from the playground for the 10 minutes or so that the water flows.

“That’s what it’s all about. That’s why we did it,” Bourque said about how it feels to watch young people enjoying the water features.

One Pictou County parent who lives near the park is expecting her children to be there often.

“It’s a wonderful addition to the community. There’s lots of young families in Westville, so it gives them a nice, safe spot to come and play. When you look today, these kids don’t know each other, and they’re getting along and playing. It’s all about building relationships within the community and I think the splash park definitely does that,” Megan Little said, adding that they’re fortunate to have the rotary club provide the space for kids. “It’s wonderful. We’re happy.”

The Rotary Club of Westville announced their plans for a $150,000 project in February with the intent to open in the summer during the park’s 20th anniversary.

It’s been a goal for many years, with the installation of equipment starting earlier this month. Bourque noted the project had help from the town’s public works and the fire departments.

Though the splash pad is now a reality, Dignan said they’re still accepting donations, with under $20,000 left to fundraise.

He noted while the pad is in Westville, it’s for everyone to use. Dignan added that water shoes or sneakers are recommended.

It opens at 11 a.m. on Saturday, with a barbecue. The Great Trail celebration is also planned in Acadia Park at 1 p.m. with yoga and a guided walk/meditation.
