Splash Park hours of operation set

- BY SAM MACDONALD

The hours of operation for the Westville Splash Park are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. – to remain in effect until the park closes for the season.

CAO Lynn Rice provided an update to the Town of Westville council at their Monday meeting, explaining what plans are for the new feature located in Acadia Park.

“I know we have some comments about the children going back to school… and the park being open until 5 p.m. being too a short time for them to enjoy it,” said Rice. “Some people said maybe it should be open a little later.”

Rice said the reason the hours of operation were chosen was so the town can set a benchmark for water use for the park, “and our peak consumption times are between 6 and 8 a.m. and 5 and 7 p.m., so we need to know what our volumes are.”

Once benchmarks are established through a trial period, Rice said the town is better able to judge if there are any changes or adjustments needed going forward. Planning relating to that will take place over the winter.

“We will be ready to go with extended hours of operation, come the opening of the new season, next year,” said Rice. “Bear with us. It might seem a little inconvenient right now, but it’s for the benefit of operations.”

When asked what protocol is in place for winterizing the park at the end of the season, Rice said the main structures will remain up, and that they will be drained, filled with antifreeze and capped.

The Westville Splash Park officially opened on Aug. 26, as part of the Great Trail celebrations in Westville.
