October is Canadian Library Month! During this month, libraries and library partners across Canada raise awareness of the valuable role libraries play in Canadians’ lives. What will you discover by using your library card? A visit will get you thinking...

Join us this week, starting with National Seniors Day on Oct. 1, as we recognize NS Public Libraries Seniors Week. All this special week, we also extend an invitation to Grandparents to join us as special guests during our Children’s Programs this week at the library, as we celebrate NS Public Libraries Seniors Week with fun, stories & songs.

Join us at the Westville Library as we “Travel through Greece – the Islands and the Mainland” on Wednesday, Oct. 4 at 2:30 p.m., with the library’s own Eric Stackhouse talking about his recent travel to the islands and mainland of Greece, the logistics around his travel as well as the historical sights and culture. Light refreshments will be served.

October is also Mi’kmaq History Month. We will welcome distinguished guest speaker, Gerald Gloade, Mi’kmaw First Nations, to share with us a special presentation on “Mi’kmaq History of the Maritimes: about the Traditional Districts of Mi’kma’ki, the Land of the Mi’kmaw”, on Thursday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. at the New Glasgow Library.

Gerald R. Gloade is an artist and educator who is currently the Program Development Officer for the Mi’kmawey Debert Cultural Centre based in Truro. He started his career working as a Graphic Designer for the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources’ Communications and Education Branch more than 30 years ago. As an artist, educator and Mi’kmaw storyteller, Gerald guides the development of visitor and educational programs for the future cultural centre. His stories and interpretations of the Kluskap legends in particular have captured many audiences.

Mi’kma’ki, the Land of the Mi’kmaw, was divided into 9 distinct Districts. We will look at these areas through the Mi’kmaw language, a verb based language that describes how each of these areas got their name. The Archaeological tools found in different parts of Nova Scotia tell the stories of our earliest inhabitants. We will look at these tools and see how they are connected to Nova Scotia’s unique geological inventory.

Several more special programs celebrating Mi’kmaq History Month are coming up later in the month at the Pictou Library, from learning the language, to making Talking Sticks and Dreamcatchers.

And to wrap up the week, on Friday from 2-5 p.m. the Pictou library is inviting folks to drop by for “Sharing Stories Social”. Family, friends and neighbours are welcome to stop in and share stories, and light refreshments will be served. All are welcome!

Yarn please

The Stellarton Library’s Stellar Knitters are in need of some yarn donations for a local school project that they are working on this fall, making cozy warm woolen children’s hats. If you have some spare yarn at home that is gathering dust, please consider donating it to the Stellarton Library. Thank you!
