Today’s girls can take the first steps to becoming tomorrow’s leaders by working with horses and being part of a team.

The 12-14 girls in Grades 6 and 7 will enjoy this unique teambuilding exercise at Sumac Farms on Oct. 11, International Day of the Girl, to be hosted by the Pictou County Women’s Resource and Sexual Assault Centre with help from SeaBreeze Leadership Development.

“I think the real message we’re trying to give – and the most important – is that we believe in the girls of this community and what they’re trying to achieve,” said Delaney Collins, navigator at the women’s centre.

She added that working with horses will teach girls confidence, stepping up and being a leader, how to work in a team and interacting with others.

Ultimately, Collins said that girls had to feel able to reach their life goals and feel like valuable members of their community.

“I hope the result of this is that any girl who partakes in this will see the strength of people in their families, their lives, their communities and strives to be more like that or to see themselves in those characteristics,” said Collins.

The Nova Scotia Advisory Council on the Status of Women sponsored this event promoting girls as leaders in Pictou County.

International Day of the Girl is dedicated to championing girls’ rights around the world and celebrating their achievements.

Based in New Glasgow, the Pictou County Women’s Resource and Sexual Assault Centre is a drop-in unit for women who need help. Its two support workers help women negotiate everything from court cases against their attackers to financial matters.

The centre also offers events for women in Pictou County and raises awareness of any issues that may affect them.
