A library card is a window to the world

- Trecia Schell Trecia Schell, Community Services Librarian, and Branch Librarian – Books-by-Mail, River John, Stellarton and Trenton Public Libraries

A library card is the key that unlocks the doors to shared stories, adventures, history, culture, knowledge, entertainment, information and employment opportunities, connecting with family and friends – new and old, and self-discovery. And, best of all, library cards are free. All you need to do is drop by, call, or visit online to request your library card, today.

Beyond the books on the shelves, Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library subscribes to several special online programs (or “collections”) that you can access with your library card, from home, on the road and at the library.

These special collections are found as drop-down menu items from the collections tab near the top of the front page of the library website, www.parl.ns.ca and also as clickable images near the bottom of the front webpage, as you scroll downwards.

Want to learn how to say “happy holidays” in Spanish? All you need is your library card to start learning a new language. Rocket Languages is an awardwinning, interactive online language learning program, and it is fully accessible online with your library card, anywhere.

The program allows users to learn conversational language at their own pace with access from anywhere and downloadable lessons that makes for easy access on all MP3 compatible devices. Rocket Languages is also available as a free app for Android and iOS devices so you can learn languages on the go. To use this online service, you do need to set up an online account, using your library card number.

Searching for long-lost family members? Another very familiar online program very popular with genealogy enthusiasts is Ancestry.ca. At your fingertips, discover the world’s largest family history resource - immigration records, vital records, census records, family histories, court records, church records, directories, photos, military records, passenger lists and more. Full access to the entire suite of information provided by the Ancestry.ca program, is only available within the library, while using one of the public access computer terminals.

Wondering what that unfortunate “new” clunk and rattle sound is when you start your car? PARL also offers access to the online, fully searchable Chilton’s Auto Repair Library, to get the detailed information you need to tackle vehicle maintenance and repairs.

All you need to know is the automobile year, make and model. Some of Chilton Library’s more popular features include: maintenance and specification tables that provide the unique data needed for each specific vehicle, step-by-step service and repair procedures, and labour estimating tool, vacuum diagrams to simplify troubleshooting, wiring diagrams to help explain system operation, closeup photographs and illustrations for visual support, and the ASE test prep quizzes for the most popular certification exams. Chilton’s Library is fully accessible directly from the library’s front webpage, www.parl.ns.ca.

And continuing with the adventures of National Novel Writing Month, (www.nanowrimo.- org), there are a few spaces left in Monica Graham’s Writing Workshop at the Pictou Library on Nov. 18 at 1:30 p.m. Registration is required as space is limited; please contact the Pictou Library to register (902-485-5021).

For more information on upcoming library programs, special events and services, please drop by your local library branch, follow us on Twitter, find us on Facebook, or visit us online at www. parl.ns.ca.
