’Tis the season

- Trecia schell trecia Schell, Community Services Librarian, and Branch Librarian — Books-by-mail, river John, Stellarton & trenton Public Libraries

It’s the return of the library’s annual fundraising campaign for the holidays, Gift-a-Book (DVD or audiobook too). What is the perfect holiday gift for the book and movie lover on your list that keeps on giving? How about buying a book, DVD box set or audiobook for your local public library? We have something for all ages, interests, and budgets (starting at just $5).

Four great reasons it’s the perfect gift:

1. You get to read (watch or listen) to the book or DVD first.

2. Includes a nice nifty little gift card for you to tuck into a stocking or send in the mail.

3. To make sure donations are recognized — a special bookplate is placed in the inside front cover of each book, with the inscription of the gift givers name or the recipient’s name (as you wish).

4. And even more reasons to give — because the public library is a charitable organization, an income tax receipt may be issued (upon request) for items valued at $10 or higher.

How can you gift-a-book? Simply drop by one of our seven local library locations to see a display of gift books and DVDs, or visit us online at www.parl.ns.ca to view our Holiday Wish List of Books. Then pick a title (or suggest a title, if you can’t find something on the list that appeals to you), make your donation, and as soon as the book (or DVD) is ready to lend — we will let you know by email, or calling.

We’re making library history

On Nov. 30, 1917, the FraserBell Memorial Library opened to much fanfare in the Town of New Glasgow. It was the vision of Judge Patterson, and named after the town’s first clerk, Governor D. C. Fraser and the town’s first mayor, Senator Adam Bell.

The library’s modest beginning consisted of about 1,400 volumes covering standard and modern fiction, history, travel, science, relation, poetry and books on reference, and was located in “the room on the left-hand side of the foot of the stairs leading to the Town Office” (Fraser-Bell Memorial Library.” Eastern Chronicle [New Glasgow] 4 December 1917. p1).

To celebrate 100 years of public library service, the New Glasgow library is hosting a special gathering on Nov. 30 from noon–1 p.m. All are welcome to drop by and join us for cake and tea, and to share some library stories too.

New in town

Many thanks to an Active Living grant received from the N.S. Department of Communities, Culture and Heritage (Wellness Division) and with support of the Town of Stellarton, visitors to the downtown can now enjoy free WIFI coverage courtesy of the Pictou-Antigonish Regional Library.

Also newly installed is a Community Notice Board, at the Stellarton Library’s entrance. All are welcome to share their local community events notices, please leave a copy of your posters with Ellie and Leslie, at the Stellarton Library.
