Blair ups pro record to 2-0

- BY KEVIN ADSHADE

Brody Blair improved his professional boxing record to 2-0 on Saturday in Cape Breton.

Fighting as part of a seven-bout card at Centre 200, Blair recorded a technical knockout of Alejandro Garcia midway through the fourth and final round; he caught his Mexican opponent with a heavy shot to the body, then followed it up by getting Garcia pinned up against the ropes and throwing a flurry of punches until the referee stepped in to end the bout.

“He was a tough opponent,” said the 25-year-old Pictou-based boxer, who fought in the amateur ranks for several years before turning pro early in 2017.

“He was taking some good shots and he just kept coming at me.”

Blair said he tried to remain patient and relaxed throughout the fight and used his jab to slowly wear his opponent down, while at the same time trying to avoid the type of hard punches that he knew Garcia is capable of throwing in his direction.

“I just kind of boxed him, picking away at him,” Blair said.

“Missing those hard shots that he was throwing can tire a guy out.”

Once he noticed Garcia starting to show signs of fatigue, Blair started going to the body to soften him up.

Blair said he appreciated the support of a large contingent of Pictou County fight fans who made the trip to Sydney to take in the matches – he estimated that at least 50 showed up to cheer him on.

An estimated 2,200 boxing fans in total were on hand for what had been billed as the first pro boxing card in Cape Breton since 1988.

Blair said he trained hard for the match “and it paid off for me” and added that he will take a few days off, then will “sit down with my team” to determine what’s next in the development of his pro career.

Blair has stated in the past that his long-term goal is to one day fight for a Canadian title.

“He was a tough opponent … He was taking some good shots and he just kept coming at me.”
