Riverview Home receives donation for programming

- BY SAM MACDONALD

Thanks to some support from the Kinsmen Club of New Glasgow, the residents of the Riverview Home will be able to more successfully pursue hobbies and other recreational activities.

The $1,000 donated by the Kinsmen to the Riverview Home Corporation volunteer association will go toward a number of services, such as busing for residents.

“That busing can be to things going on within the county, or beyond,” said Clarrie MacKinnon, president of the Riverview Home volunteer association. “For example, in the summer, we’ll go to Shubenacadie Wildlife Park or, like last night, we take them around the county to look at the Christmas lights.”

Primarily, the expenditures have been related to “extracurricular activities,” said MacKinnon, describing the recreational needs of the residents.

The money has also gone toward the purchase of some new technology – 20 iPads have been bought for residents, “and the enjoyment residents have gotten out of them has been tremendous,” said MacKinnon, noting that many residents have been able to pursue interests, such as Elvis Presley’s music, far more easily with the new technology.

MacKinnon said the money will go toward every recreational need that residents have, “so if one person wants to go snowshoeing, we’ll get snowshoes for that person.” He noted that the support the volunteer association has gotten from the Kinsmen is phenomenal.

“The Riverview volunteer association has been in existence for a number of years, and it has spent tens of thousands of dollars over those years on the adult residents of the Riverview home system,” said MacKinnon.
