Bantam AA girls rise to the challenge
The Fundy Highland Bantam AA Subway Selects female hockey team took on the challenge. And they delivered. Spurred on by a female team from the Annapolis Valley that was doing a charity fundraiser down there, the 13- and 14-year-old Bantam AAs held a Christmas drive for Tearmann House, the local agency that assists abused women and children.
“They were doing something in their area, and they challenged our team to pick a charity of choice in our community,” said Tonya Gennoe, one of the parents who helped spearhead the project.
Most of the items – toys for the children, along with personal care products – were gathered during the Subway Cup in October, and a representative from Tearmann House stopped by the Pictou County Wellness Centre to do pick up all the stuff that had been collected.
“This group of young women is an example of the support that the Tearmann Society receives from our community. Not just at Christmas, but the whole year through,” said executive director Donna Smith, whose organization worked with more than 80 women this year – and 45 children.
The Bantam AA team is comprised of players not just from Pictou County, but Colchester
and Antigonish counties as well. Some of the items collected during the project will be distributed to Third Place Transition House in Truro and Naomi Society in
Antigonish, both of which offer services similar to Tearmann House.
“We felt it was the right thing to do around Christmas, to help
those less fortunate in the community,” said team captain Alyssa Fitt.
“It makes us feel good, to do it as a team.”
