Storm causes closures in many parts of county

-

Schools were closed before the first snowflakes fell and cancellations continued throughout the day, as Pictou County was hit with its first storm of the season Thursday, which brought high winds, snow and rain.

In addition to schools in the Chignecto Central Regional School Board as well as the NSCC campus in Stellarton, a number of provincial government offices in Pictou County and elsewhere in Nova Scotia closed early due to the weather.

The Labour and Advanced Education office in New Glasgow, together with the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture in Pictou were closed at 2 p.m. and by mid-afternoon police were warning people to stay off the roads if at all possible.

“Officers have reported on patrols this afternoon that road conditions are partially snow covered and slippery. In some areas strong winds have resulted in decreased visibility. Night time will further increase decreased visibility and blowing snow conditions,” stated New Glasgow Regional Police Const. Ken MacDonald.

Police also reminded people not to park in areas that would impact snow removal.

Under section 139 of the Nova Scotia Motor Vehicle Act, tickets can be issued and vehicles can be towed any time, day or night, if they are parked in a way that interferes with snow clearing.
