Battle of the brushes

Event March 3 at The Commune is a chance for artists to display their work and to raise money for the Art at Night Society

-

The Battle of the Brushes will return to The Commune on March 3.

The painting competition and sale will see local artists in two categories: 19 and over, and — new this year — a competition for younger artists, as The Art at Night Society wanted to give budding young artists an opportunity to showcase their work at the New Glasgow establishment.

Jillian Hennick, artist relations with the Art at Night Society, and event co-ordinator Ian Grant both work at Pictou County high schools, “and we know there are fabulous young artists out there,” Hennick said.

The artists will paint for 20 minutes during the Battle of the Brushes and those in attendance will have a chance to vote for their favourite. Winners will move on to subsequent rounds and a winner will be declared after the final round.

There will be a silent auction for all the paintings after the competition, with proceeds from the art sale being split between the Society and the artists themselves.

This year will be the seventh annual Art of Night, which will take place May 5, when dozens of artists gather in downtown New Glasgow to display their works, such as sculpture, music, painting or any other genre.

“Every year, there is a large number of youth interested in the event,” Grant said. “We get people as young as 12 and as old as 75.”

Anyone interested in being part of Battle of the Brushes can access the Society’s Facebook page or email: NGartatnight@ gmail.com.
