Sue Ellen Cummings
Sue Ellen Cummings, age 63, of Lawrencetown died on Monday, Jan. 22, 2018, in the Dartmouth General Hospital after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer.
Sue was the youngest daughter of Bernette (Young) Cummings and the late Samuel Benvie Cummings of Stellarton.
Sue is survived by her son, Jason Daniel (Shannon) MacDonald, her two grandsons, Findlay and Caislin MacDonald, missed by Rick Fougere, step-daughter Karen (Warren) Taylor, step-son Michael Fougere, step-grandchildren Sierra, Morgan, Sadie and Aubrey, God-daughter Keira Mortez and sisters Carolyn Cummings, Dartmouth, Leanne (Brian) Morgan, Prince George, B.C., Linda (Lloyd) MacKay, New Glasgow, and brother, Ben (Anne) Cummings, Pine Tree, and several nieces and nephews, Sue’s special friends, Robyn Kitson, Carolyn Marshall, Teresa MacDonald, Linda MacDonald, Nancy Cochran, Donald Margeson and Karen Holley.
Sue was predeceased by her first husband, Walter MacDonald.
Sue’s work history included as a Federal and Provincial Government employee, Department of Community Services Head Office, N.S., Mount St. Vincent Motherhouse, Bedford as an Occupational Health and Safety Consultant, Maritime Steel & Foundries, New Glasgow.
Sue was a very kind and loving person who loved people. She was very adventurous and loved to travel having gone to Scotland, Ireland, Cuba, Spain, Portugal, U.S. and Mexico. Sue enjoyed learning about other cultures. Sue loved a challenge and was willing to give anything a try. She loved to garden and had created a beautiful Japanese garden in her back yard as well as growing her own vegetables and preserving them. She enjoyed painting and created beautiful pictures, was a beautiful skater, and loved to decorate her home for various occasions. Sue had a wonderful sense of humour and laughed easily.
Sue was a member of the Stellarton Balmoral Pipe Band, Stellarton, Clan Thompson, and Halifax Police Pipers and Drums for many years and taught drumming to many young students in Pictou County. Sue participated in Pipe Band Competitions throughout Canada, attended Scotland Worlds in 1989 with the Halifax Police Pipes & Drums and also played in the Halifax and Virginia Tattoos.
A very special thank you to Dr. Diane Darcy, Halifax, for her consistent, excellent care and dedication and Dr. Maria Lyrea, the 11th Floor Chemo Nurses, Dickson Centre and the Oncology physicians and nurses, at the QEII Health Centre, Palliative Care Doctors and Nurses at the Dartmouth General Hospital, nurses on the 4th East and 3rd West floors, VON nurses who all gave Sue such wonderful and compassionate care.
Cremation has taken place. A private burial will be held for the family at the Brookside Cemetery in New Glasgow in the Spring. In keeping with Sue’s wishes, a Celebration of Life and reception will be held for family and friends to celebrate Sue’s life at the Angus Funeral Home, New Glasgow, on January 26 at 2 p.m. At this time anyone wishing to say a few words on Sue’s behalf is free to do so.
