Hoping, wishing, thinking of an upset

- Kevin Adshade

Before we get to the usual mumbo-jumbo, there is a need to clarify something that appeared last week in this space.

The original idea for the 150 Pucks display at the Pictou County Wellness Centre was meant to be New Glasgow-centred, but three town officials, trying to be inclusive (because we all know what happens here when they don’t), clearly stated the display was about Pictou County as a whole, which is why I questioned the absence of a couple of historic hockey moments in this county.

If it’s about New Glasgow (the town actually paid for the display’s construction), just say it’s about New Glasgow and let the naysayers say nay.

I hope that clears things up.

Super Bowl, or Super Bore? Not only do the New England Patriots seem to score touchdowns when they really need them, they also have a lightsout defence. The Philadelphia Eagles, appearing in their third Super Bowl – they lost the first two – can win this thing, though, because both their offensive line and defensive line are able to control games.

I’m feeling an upset here, but maybe that is just wishful thinking. And yet, upon further review, however, I was right the first time: the upset is coming, and Tom Brady is going to be thunderously angry, screaming at his teammates like a two-year throwing a tantrum. He does that when things aren’t going his way, you see.

Eagles win, 23-21.

Non-sports thoughts

of the week

• Because we human beings have a sense of entitlement like no other species (with the possible exception of cats), we take electricity for granted, until we find ourselves fumbling around in the dark, trying to find flashlights or candles without knocking the parakeet cage over. Let me tell you, Charlie (the occupant of said cage) was not happy when he couldn’t watch Judge Judy the other night after something went wrong at the power plant in Trenton. He just kept looking at me, like it was my fault.

• Here are a few possible upcoming topics for The Current, the morning CBC radio program that could use some balance, genderly speaking and otherthings-speaking.

A few Super Bowl tidbits, borrowed from the Internet:

• Americans will eat 14,500 tons of potato chips (almost none of them salt-free) during the Super Bowl on Sunday.

• The Minnesota Vikings played in four Super Bowls and never held a lead in any of them.

• Last year’s win by the New England Patriots was the first time a Super Bowl went into overtime.

• In the U.S, other than St. Patrick’s Day, more drivers are involved in alcohol-related accidents on Super Bowl Sunday than any other day of the year.

• One out of every 12 people watching the game are only there for the party, the TV commercials and the half-time show.
