A miracle in the making

- Fred Jeffery is a retired school administrator and longtime member of the Salvation Army. Fred Jeffery

Do you believe in this modern age that miracles still happen? What are the chances of God reaching down from His heavens and directly intervening in an answer to your prayer? Of course, to every believing Christian we would say resoundingly that miracles still happen, for we see our faithful God intervening in the affairs of men and women, and let us not forget the young people also who are recipients of a miracle in the making.

Even the angels of God are amazed at God’s wise and loving involvement with wayward earthlings. What else is there to say in response to our own miracles from God but to quote Rev. 4:8: “Day and night they (the angels) never stop saying: ‘Holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty,’ who was, and is, and is to come.” That is my response as well to a miracle when God intervened directly to help us while travelling to the United States on Jan. 26 just last month. I know this as a miracle.

My wife and I were on our way to visit Rob and Samantha and especially to see our little granddaughter Victoria. It was our second day of travel since leaving home. I remember on the day we left that we held hands and prayed that God would safely take us to New York. The weather had been wonderful as we started travelling with no snow in sight and the traffic light. We spent the first night in Westbrook, Maine, just outside Portland. That evening after dinner we gave thanks to God for journeying mercies.

The second day of travel presented some difficulties to us. The traffic became heavier and although we were following the guide from CAA, their Trip Tik booklet specially prepared for us, somehow we took the wrong exit and now we were lost. This added more time to our destination and now it was getting dark as we were approaching the outskirts of New York City. Travelling here is not for the faint of heart and we had no idea where we were going to stay as Rob was expecting us the next morning. By now my nerves were frayed and it was dark and there were thousands of cars on the road and we didn’t know where to go for the night. We had disconnected our phones before leaving home so we had no way to contact our son Rob.

Then the miracle began to take shape. I didn’t see the sign of this at the time as I was just frustrated. We drove down a street and we saw a mall nearby in Spring Valley, N.Y. We knew Rob lived close to this mall but had no way of contacting him. I said to my wife that we should go inside and get a coffee while we plan where we are going to stay. Just as we walked through the main door of this huge mall that had hundreds of cars in its parking lot at 6:30 p.m. on a Friday night, who did we see coming directly before us but Rob and our little granddaughter Victoria! He was as surprised as we were for he had not been expecting us until the next day.

My worries were now over for a miracle had just occurred. What are the chances that in the thousands of people around we would meet our son coming out the door of this mall, one of many doors, heading home at the same time as we were going into the mall? Just a few seconds later we would have missed each other. God’s timing was perfect and exact. Our miracle in the making had just occurred. All I could say in my heart was “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty. Praise be to your name!”

You may not agree with me that this was a miracle but the timing for God’s intervention in our lives that evening was miraculous. Many of you can give testimony to the many times God intervened in your lives with a direct answer to your prayers because of your trust in His unchanging love. Yes, God allows us to be tested and challenged but when we put our trust in Him, He delivers in his own time which, as it was in my case, was perfect. There is nothing beyond God’s reach when it comes to helping those who trust in Him.

What is your prayer today? Reach out and touch Him from your innermost need, from your heart to the heart of God and He will be with you. I conclude with this wonderful verse of a song we sing:

“There’s a miracle in the making! One just for you the Father is working even now. Your prayers have been heard and the answer is on its way. There’s a miracle in the making for you today.”

I believe this with all my heart, do you? Reach out to Him today in prayer.
