A cappella singers to visit deCoste as part of Canadian tour
Black Umfolosi are no strangers to Canadian audiences, having performed hundreds of shows in this country, from coast to coast. In February they will embark on a tour that will take them right across Canada.
Fans can expect the same blend of dance and a cappella singing that has made Black Umfolosi something of a legend, and given them a reputation as one of the finest vocal groups from the African continent.
They will be at the deCoste Performing Arts Centre on Saturday, March 3, as part of the Winter Blast Festival.
Black Umfolosi were formed in 1982 by school friends in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, who named themselves after the Umfolozi Omnyama River in South Africa — to where their ancestors can be traced. Over the years members have come and gone and today Black Umfolosi continue the tradition of taking African music to the world.
Their performances are energy driven and completely engaging, mixing a great gentleness of spirit and song with an exuberance in dance. Their trademark harmonies mixed with intricate rhythms, clicking and clapping are highlighted during their brilliantly choreographed shows with a full range of movements from subtle to vibrant stomping and leaping. Their famous Gumboot Dances showcase the traditional styles and rituals of the South African mining regions and are a particular crowd pleaser.
