-

There’s a new man in charge of Pictou County’s Mounties.

Staff Sergeant Addie Maccallum has been named as the new district commander for Pictou County RCMP, which includes Pictou County, the Town of Pictou and Pictou Landing First Nation.

Maccallum joined the RCMP in 1996 from his home province of Prince Edward Island and has worked in many roles during his 21-year career in the RCMP including general duty, community policing, general investigation section and street crime enforcement.

Maccallum was first posted to Kelowna, B.C., and after seven years he was transferred to Nova Scotia, where he worked in Caledonia, Bible Hill and Guysborough. He transferred to Pictou District in August 2017.

As district commander, Maccallum will be working with the communities within Pictou District to identify and implement local policing priorities. He plans to work closely with the many service providers in Pictou County as well as municipal councils and the band chief, council, elders and youth to focus on building and maintaining partnerships, in the pursuit of keeping communities safe.

“I am honoured and very excited to be here in beautiful Pictou County,” Maccallum said in a release. “Since my arrival, I have learned a great deal about the challenges our communities face and what the RCMP can do meet their expectations. I am privileged to work with such a dedicated group of employees here at Pictou District RCMP, who work tirelessly to keep our communities safe. Modern policing is rapidly changing and complex, but we continue to focus on the fact that truly effective policing happens when communities and the police work together as a team. I am confident that the people who are your Pictou District RCMP understand this and possess the knowledge and skills to meet any challenge. I look forward to working with the community.”
