Man threatens to kill his father; judge tells him to get his life in order

A judge told a young man who threatened to kill his father that he needs to “come up with a plan” to get his life in order.

“I think that there’s a number of things that need to be sorted out,’’ Provincial Chief Court Judge Nancy Orr told 21-year-old Bradley Holland in court.

Orr directed Holland to return to court on March 26 with a concrete plan that includes finding a permanent place and an environment that will give him “a fighting chance this time.”

Crown attorney Jeff MacDonald said that alcohol does not mix well with Holland, noting the man needs to refrain from consuming booze if he hopes to keep out of trouble.

“It’s really up to Mr. Holland as to whether he wants to beat this problem or not,” said MacDonald, who noted Holland always seems to get into trouble when he drinks. The court also heard earlier this month that Holland has had significant addiction issues.

Holland pleaded guilty in midFebruary to threatening his father. According to facts read into court at the time, after arriving home extremely intoxicated on Dec. 24, Holland threatened to put a knife through his father’s head.

Holland’s father told police he felt his son needed medical help. Holland was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital for psychological assessment after making suicidal comments. Orr also noted that while it is nice Holland is working full-time, he needs to get his life back on track if he hopes to remain employed.

He will be sentenced next month.
