Northern Selects take regular season title

-

The Northern AAA Subway Selects captured the Nova Scotia Female Hockey League regular season title, winning all five games at the league championship tournament held this past weekend in Moncton.

Although the Selects finished in first place through the regular season, the league title was decided in a seven-team tournament format involving all teams in the league.

The Selects opened their weekend on Friday with a 6-0 win over Pro Cresting Penguins, before defeating Moncton by the same score later that night.

On Saturday, the Selects took on the Northern Lightning from the Miramichi and walked off with a 10-2 victory.

In the semifinal held Sunday morning, the Subways had a rematch with Moncton and came out on top with a 5-0 win. The final saw the Selects take on Cape Breton, the second-place team in the regular season.

The game went two scoreless periods before the Selects scored midway through the third period to take a 1-0 lead, a lead they would not relinquish in capturing the first-ever league title in Selects history.

The Selects return to provincial playoff action this coming weekend, hosting Cape Breton for games 1 and 2 in a best-of-five series at the Pictou County Wellness Centre this coming weekend.

Game 1 on Saturday is at 12:30 p.m. with Game 2 going Sunday morning at 11:30 a.m.

The winner of the series will advance to the Atlantic championships, which will be held in St. John’s, N.L., over the Easter weekend.
