Rescuers ‘rose to action’

Mother of man found in woods a day after crash thankful for turn of events

If Deanna Mohamed could meet the police dog who found her son, she’d give it a big hug.

“We’re so thankful he’s alive,” she said Wednesday from the Victoria General Hospital in Halifax where her son is recovering from injuries he sustained when he was thrown from his car. Police believe the vehicle went off the road in Salt Springs, Pictou County, in the early hours of Saturday, March 3.

If it weren’t for the police, community and, ultimately, the dog that found him almost 23 hours after he was last seen, she’s not sure he would have made it.

“I feel like everything that happened – him being found – was by the grace of God and the power of social media,” she said. “I’m beyond blessed.”

Ahmed, 19, was reported missing Saturday evening after he hadn’t been seen by family and friends since the early morning hours of that day in New Glasgow. It was because of the push through social media that Ahmed was found. Someone in the area had seen the vehicle that crashed earlier in the day, but assumed it was an old accident.

When word spread about Ahmed being missing, people in the community were able to lead police to the crashed vehicle. Police were then able to bring in their K9 unit to locate Mohamed, who had been thrown from the vehicle.

“We are so thankful and so grateful for the people who rose to action,” Deanna said in an interview with The News.

She said both the New Glasgow police and RCMP officers were great to deal with throughout the nightmare situation. Since Ahmed was found and transported to Halifax, she said everyone from the doctors and nurses to people in the community who have brought meals have been phenomenal.

Ahmed still has a long road of recovery ahead of him, but thankfully has no broken bones and is walking again, she said.
